Around the World Series 6: Navigating Headwinds: Japan’s Path to Carbon Neutrality
Following the 2015 Paris Agreement, Japan declared its commitment to carbon neutrality by 2050 under former Prime Minister Suga in 2020. While both public and private sectors began mobilising toward this goal, the path to carbon neutrality has become increasingly challenging due to:
- Energy security concerns arising from Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022
- Rising inflation and supply chain disruptions
- Adverse impact from policy shifts with the US administration change in 2025
Despite these headwinds, the fundamental need to reduce environmental impact remains unchanged, particularly as global population and energy demand continue to grow.
The importance of innovative technologies has never been greater. Japanese companies are actively developing practical GHG reduction solutions and cutting-edge technologies to minimise emissions associated with oil and natural gas production.
